 Last year this time, I was in a long awaited bright clearing in my path. I wish I were in that spot again. 

 

 Standing between menacing rocks is not easy at all. I wish I could have the strength I had last year to keep them apart.

I also wish I were on vacation in the Dolomites right now.

 

 I was really looking forward to participating in a great artist residency this summer. Alas, it has to wait for some other time. 

But the world will be so different.

 

 I was also so much looking forward to an important and long awaited exhibition of mine to open. But alas, it has been postponed.

 I really would have liked to be closer to family. I am so grateful to be living with part of them, but have been missing others. 

And since flying is out of the question, who knows when this would be possible.


 Finally, I was hoping to be in Texas. At some point - or another - this year. But that will have to wait, too.

Before I get out of bed I usually spend a few minutes mentally going over the activities and chores that I had previously planned to do for the day. I got Mario out of my daughter’s room and took him out for a short stroll in the garden. Being a small dog- a Shih Tzu, and living in Karachi where walking outside the walls of your house is not the norm, a quick run for him around the garden usually suffices.   I drank my customary hot water with lemon and started with morning chores such as running the washing machine, planning meals for the day, and pottering in the kitchen. Week 18 - in Turkey we find Gul reflecting on family and the irretrievable nature of time

In old times, the Bayram – that’s what we call for religious festivals- meant visiting family elderly relatives & neighbors, then recent years, going on holidays, and now, is neither family visits nor holidays. Thanks to the COVID-19.    We’re on the second day of the Feast of the Sacrifice. There are more people at this Aegean Coast as people came to their parent’s summerhouses instead of going to holiday. You see the smile on older people’s face and gardens full of laughter and fun.    This time last year, we were at the same coast but everything changed in this one year. The fun part has gone completely and we entered in a very quiet summer period. Last year we enjoyed the summer sun with friends and family. We had many BBQs at our garden and invited lots of people. This time last year we all felt like it was the end of the world.  Luckily a reliable vaccine was found in early January and distributed around the world to everyone in record time thanks to a combined effort from every country around the world. After a few months most places returned to a new normal and everyone started to rebuild the damage COVID-19 had wrought across the globe.    Amazingly the worldwide distribution of a free vaccine for all was just the beginning of a major shift in the way countries dealt with each other.    Profits, share dividends and the exploitation of billions of people soon took a backseat to fair wages, free childcare and a raft of legislation to protect the environment.
