Week 28 - We find Simon in reflective mood, delivering wise words

Hello everyone, it’s been a little while!

I’ve been really busy at home and at work and have been a bit slack-even missing Reading Week last week, which I should be ashamed about.

To make amends I’ll quickly reveal that I have always been a mad fan of sci-fi/fantasy books and for the last few years my absolute favorite author is Joe Abercrombie. The man is a genius and his writing is unreal-funny, violent, sad, realistic, sexy, and surprising. If you are after a new read, check out his first book, The Blade Itself. Thank me later…

Enough of fantasy. Back to reality…bloody hell! I wish I could go back to fantasy again…

For the umpteenth month in a row, Western Australia is basically COVID-free and our economy is going nuts and I’m super-busy at work. Our borders remain closed and the rest of the country is not doing too badly. I have got to the stage where I have stopped searching out the international facts and figures on a daily or weekly basis. Most of the time I find out by listening to the radio or watching TV and almost finding out by accident.

It’s strange really, this has been going on for so long and we have been unaffected by it for so long now that it all feels like a bad dream or a horrible movie starring everybody else. I don’t know whether to feel relieved that we are living so normally or guilty that we are not suffering under the same restrictions and infection rates as so many other people. And because people are basically selfish, I keep on thinking how unfair it is that my friends and family are not allowed to come and visit yet - First World Problems…

We have just come to the end of the soccer season and our 12-year-old son has been training/playing 3 days a week for months now. We may just get a few evenings of our life back for a while. We are in mid-Spring and are starting to think about Christmas. It will be a bit different this year mainly because my Dad won’t be here.

The weather is always a lottery on Christmas Day and can be anywhere between 25c and 45c! For so many people in Australia, never mind around the world, it will be a festive holiday like no other. It would be nice to think that for once it could be less about the gifts and the money and more about the simple pleasure of spending quality time with friends and relatives. After all, isn’t that what life should be about anyway?
