Week 42 - Olivia gets on her bike, and finds a new job

Olivia - Liverpool, UK

My week kicked off with some excellent news.

I was offered a digital marketing job at a local charity that I really, really wanted to work for! I’m thrilled to have got a job that I know I will enjoy, especially in the current climate.

With the weather on my side, I planned to use my last few days of unemployment purposefully. I got back on my bike and cycled to some of the green spaces in my local area.

The first hints of spring appeared this week, too.

Snowdrops and daffodils have started to sprout up in the local parks and it feels good to know that we’re getting more a bit more daylight with each day that passes by.

I’ve started bringing a flask of tea to warm me up as I read on a park bench.

Other days, I’ll just watch the world go by and take in the serene atmosphere. It’s these little things that have kept me going.

In the news this week, we learned that the UK has hit a major vaccination milestone, with 10 million first doses now administered. My grandparents received their first dose of the vaccine, which felt like a small win for our family.

The country also mourned the death of Captain Tom Moore.

Last April, the legendary 99-year-old veteran planned to walk one hundred lengths of his garden with the aim of raising £1,000 for the NHS.

By his 100th birthday, Captain Tom’s heart-warming endeavor had made him a national hero and helped to raise over £30 million!

A lot of us were envious to hear that the Isle of Man has now had its lockdown restrictions completely lifted.

The small island, which is part of the UK, is just a short ferry ride from Liverpool over the Irish Sea.

Its population is able to return to a near-normal way of life and its borders will remain closed to visitors.

The rest of the UK has a lot of catching up to do. Lockdown 3.0 isn’t showing any signs of letting up yet.

It is hoped that pupils in England will be able to return to school on 8th March. However, this could be pushed back further as the government is wary of ending another lockdown too soon.

In these precarious times, it’s easy to feel powerless and frustrated.

One thing I have learned this week is that with a book and a bicycle, you are always free.
